ABOUT
J. HOFFMAN LUMBER COMPANY
20 Yrs Green
Since 1992 our family lumber operation based in Sycamore, IL has been reclaiming old growth lumber from mid-19th century Midwestern buildings that have outlived their prime. Giving new life to old, we have salvaged and repurposed millions of board feet of lumber which might otherwise have landed in landfills.
We strive to be good stewards of our earth by making every facet of our operation waste free and eco-friendly.
Reclaimed Materials
Our stock lumber consists of hard woods – oak, maple, ash, elm and walnut – and soft woods – Douglas fir, heart pine, and white pine.
This lumber is graded, denailed, and stored at our five acre sawmill facility ready to be sold “As Is” or processed further.
RECLAIMED WOOD
BRINGING THE PAST TO THE PRESENT
Why use reclaimed lumber?
Eco Friendly
- Reclaimed lumber conserves natural resources while preserving a piece of American history
- The use of reclaimed lumber fulfills requirements for Leed Certification, US Green Building Council projects and historical restorations, and new construction demands for eco-friendly building products.
- Lumber salvaged from demolition projects and urban development dramatically reduces landfill waste
History
- Due to its size, structural strength and durability, old growth lumber, particularly Heart Pine and Doug Fir, was cut to near extinction during the Industrial Revolution.
- Recycling and repurposing this antique wood for modern day products ensures this historical component of our country’s early growth will live on for our generation and beyond.
Appearance and Quality
- Because it has been aged, worn and weathered, reclaimed lumber has a desirable look with unique characteristics all its own.
- The quality of old growth lumber’s dense tight grain and rich patina comes from hundreds of years of growth which cannot be duplicated in present day lumber.
